Review by Adam Jones - MUSIC FARMER 5
An Indie Anthem of Resilience and Gratitude
In the world of indie music, it's not often that a song comes along that is both timeless and utterly "of the moment", but SPENCER BRILL's debut single, "Hospital Song," deftly achieves that feat. This unforgettable track is an anthem for elder millennials, capturing the essence of early 2000s indie rock while carving out a space all its own.
The first thing that strikes me about "Hospital Song" is Brill's voice, which is passionate; powerful-yet-intimate. It's a quality also possessed by the likes of Weezer's Rivers Cuomo. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of Brill's harrowing week-long hospital stay due to COVID-19, and his powerful vocals draw the listener in, making you feel like you're right there with him.
The musical backdrop is a glorious mix of edgy, funky guitar solos reminiscent of Modest Mouse, and a spacious-yet-tight rhythm section that punctuate the lyrics. The chorus features the haunting repetition of "Breathe In, Breathe Out," with each phrase accompanied by dramatic hits from the band, symbolizing heavy breathing. This theatrical touch adds a layer of depth to the song that gives it even deeper meaning.
