MUSIC FARMER 5 - Review by Adam Jones
A Triumphant Musical Journey: Swinging from Rock's Vines with Grace & Power
In a world awash with cacophonous sounds and monotonous rhythms, BB STEVENS breaks the mold with his EP, "Not My Monkeys" - an audacious blend of nostalgia and innovation. With each song, BB STEVENS dares us to journey with him, exploring the vast landscape of human emotions with authenticity and fervor.
The EP opens with "GoodbiBaby," a track that sets a high bar. Its introductory guitar riff feel like the pulse of a neon-lit city, vibrant and alive. And when BB STEVENS' voice enters, a whirlwind of emotions crash like waves, harkening to the titans like Bruce Springsteen and David Bowie. The classical guitar at the bridge is a surprising touch, a poetic breather amidst the electric intensity.
"Luciferâs Rain" pulls us into a captivating realm, juxtaposing scripture and rockabilly. BB STEVENSâ mesmerizing vocals play with the echoes of memory, both haunting and enticing, while the chorus bursts forth in all its spooky splendor.
"Spirit Be Gone" is arguably the standout single, serving as a balm to the soul, reconciling the past with the present. The Eagles-meets-Prince vibe is not only fresh but also powerfully evocative. BB STEVENSâ whispered incantation at the end feels like an intimate secret shared, a spellbinding moment.
"Mercy Mercy" shakes the senses awake, forcing listeners to groove and sway with its electrifying beats. Every note BB STEVENS belts out oozes passion, making it impossible not to be engulfed in the energy of the track.
And finally, "Hard Hard Place" serves as an epic crescendo of the EP. The duet with the female vocalist creates a haunting harmony, making the emotions tangible and resonating deeply with listeners.
