Johns L - "My fake smile" (EP available July 28, 2023!)

MUSIC FARMER 5 - Review by Adam Jones

A Bold Expression of Emotion

In the panorama of youthful self-expression, few have been as audaciously striking as 16-year-old Johnston Lazare, popularly known as Johns L. With his debut EP, "My fake smile," Johns L ushers in an era of musical introspection and raw authenticity that resonates deeply with the listener's psyche.

The title track, "My fake smile," is a poignant introduction to Johns L's world of emotional exploration. It opens with an synthesizer soundscapes, which blends perfectly with the artist's intimate vocals and use of the vocoder, bringing to mind the unique sound of Imogen Heap. Johns L propels his voice to an ecstatic zenith halfway into the track, marking a dramatic shift that only enhances the listener's immersion.

"Falling in the deep," the second track, proves to be a thrilling experiment. An inventive synthesis of indie vibes and unorthodox funk, the track stands as the EP's wild card. The song's pulsating piano coupled with a Beatles-esque whirl of organ and harmonies makes it an auditory experience like no other, solidifying Johns L's prowess as an experimental artist.

The EP then transitions into "Enough," a more intimate affair, swathed in layers of emotive violin and piano. Johns L's musical narrative ascends further into vulnerability with this piece, proving that his emotional range is as broad as his musical one.

The fourth track, "You'd better," is an exhilarating joyride that offers a tasteful nod to the golden era of pop-punk. With its funky bass lines, neon guitars, and radio-effect vocals, this song energizes the EP and shows Johns L's versatility as a musician.

The final track (and my FAVORITE on the album) is "Rainbow" which starts as an indie-pop ballad and evolves into an anthemic, upbeat number. The dancing acoustic guitar rhythm paired with upbeat harmonies makes it an irresistible foot-tapper and is, without doubt, the crown jewel of the EP.

With his debut EP, "My fake smile," Johns L ushers in an era of musical introspection and raw authenticity that resonates deeply with the listener's psyche.

"My fake smile" reveals Johns L as a mature and sophisticated songwriter, despite his tender age. Drawing influence from the likes of Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, and Queen, the EP is a reflection of his journey into adolescence, tackling the beauty and harshness of growth and encapsulating feelings that often go unsaid. Johns L's music is a beacon for those navigating their own emotional labyrinth, offering solace and companionship through every note.

The EP doesn't just showcase his ability to sing and play instruments; it highlights his knack for experimentation, making his first-ever release a multidimensional work of art. This self-made, self-expressed artist is sure to make waves in the music scene.

While "My fake smile" ends on a high note with "Rainbow," it's clear that this is only the beginning for Johns L. His debut hints at a promising future filled with even more emotional depth and musical exploration. "My fake smile" is more than just a collection of songs; it's an empathetic invitation to feel, grow, and discover.

*The EP will be available on all streaming platforms on July 28, 2023!*
