BIG O - "In the Company of Others"

MUSIC FARMER 5 - Review by Adam Jones

A Genesis of Genius: Orchestrating a Musical Revolution

In a musical landscape teeming with fleeting trends and momentary sparks of brilliance, BIG O stands as a beacon of relentless ingenuity, carving out a sonic territory that is as expansive as it is deeply personal. His latest album, "In the Company of Others", is a vivid testimony to the intricate journey BIG O has embarked upon since venturing into the realms of music production. The album, an autobiographical opus broken down into three riveting acts, presents listeners with an immersive exploration into the very influences that moulded these virtuoso artists into the powerhouse entities they are today.

BIG O, known outside of his musical fortress as Orlando Turner, embarks upon a musical journey that not only encapsulates his remarkable growth but also houses an impressive ensemble of masterful musicians and rappers who complement and enhance his vivid narrative.

The album unfurls gracefully with "Where We're Meant to Be", a mellifluous confluence of R&B and jazz nuances that sets the tone for the odyssey that lies ahead. The track gracefully pirouettes around its jazzy funky Moog line and transcendent piano melodies, painting aural imagery that beckons listeners to venture further into the profound depths of the album. BIG O's choice to usher in this sonic voyage with vocal proclamations resounds as a sacred invitation, ushering listeners into a sanctuary of authenticity and raw emotion.

As we delve deeper, we encounter "Cause for Concern", a striking concoction of retro hip-hop elements that incites an involuntary head bob with its ferocious groove. The track reverberates with echoes of Jay-Z's golden era, grasping your attention with an unyielding grip that refuses to relent. This magnetic pull continues through to "Ms. Takes", a shining showcase of the exhilarating energy BIG O cultivates throughout the album. A captivating blend of vocal prowess reminiscent of Jamie Foxx coupled with rap segments that channel the mastery of icons like Dr. Dre and Eminem makes this song an undeniable standout.

As we navigate further, "No Regrets" graces our senses, presenting a multi-layered auditory tapestry adorned with elements that could seamlessly integrate within the vibrant world of the Grand Theft Auto gaming franchise. The presence of soulful guitar lines and jazz chords intertwines effortlessly with 8-bit retro game samples, creating a sonorous playground that evokes nostalgia and modernity in a harmonious dance.

The journey culminates with "Farewell & Good Night", a fitting adieu that revisits the initial piano theme but with a more introspective and moody disposition. Here, the Moog takes on a new form, embodying the quiet satisfaction of a night well spent, evoking beautiful tantalizing imagery akin to the festive Casino Nights level from the original Sonic the Hedgehog video game.
