MUSIC FARMER 5 - Review by Adam Jones
A Beautiful Collision of Chaos and Clarity

With his sophomore album, Bullet, BB STEVENS delivers a a mesmerizing fusion of alternative folk, psychedelic wonder, blues-soaked passion, and heartfelt reflection. Brimming with the rebellious spirit of classic rock and the adventurous imagination of modern musical artistry, Bullet is an electrifying exploration of humanity, where moments of explosive energy give way to breathtaking tenderness and philosophical revelation.
The album bursts to life with the magnificent "Baby Burn Bright," featuring Crispin Cioe of the legendary Uptown Horns. An enormous, beautifully resonant drum kit commands the opening moments, with thunderous kick drums and rolling toms laying the foundation for gritty, driving guitars. Then enters the unmistakable voice of BB STEVENS, channeling the theatrical mystique of Jim Morrison with the untamed charisma of Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis. His smoky, commanding delivery ignites the arrangement, culminating in the exhilarating chorus, "Light ourselves on fire, we're gonna burn, we're gonna burn bright!" The result is a glorious explosion of alternative blues rock, raw and majestic in equal measure, setting the stage for the musical adventure ahead.
The atmosphere takes a darker, more urgent turn with "Another Day in the USA," an unflinching commentary on America's devastating cycle of mass shootings. Against an infectious rock arrangement, a haunting female vocal chorus declares, "Bang bang, shoot 'em up, bang bang, make it stop, another day in the USA." The contrast between the song's energetic musicality and its sobering subject matter creates an unsettling emotional intensity. An expressive guitar solo emerges during the bridge, its searching melodic phrases almost resembling a conversation struggling toward an answer. It is rock music at its most socially conscious, confronting painful realities through the power of artistic expression.
From this turbulence emerges the radiant beauty of "The People We Are," a gorgeous, atmospheric ballad that transports the listener into an almost celestial landscape. Shimmering, intertwined guitars dance above ethereal synthesizers, creating a soundscape that feels suspended somewhere between earthly intimacy and cosmic wonder. BB STEVENS delivers a deeply compassionate reflection on the interconnected nature of humanity, reminding us that the lives we touch and the love we give ultimately define what remains after we are gone. His plea to "preserve the circle, never let it break" resonates with extraordinary warmth, transforming the song into a celebration of kindness, responsibility, and the enduring beauty of human connection.
The album's rebellious pulse returns with "Just Say Yes," a spirited burst of punk-inspired rock and roll. Sharp guitar attacks and explosive drum hits recall the glorious abandon of rock's golden years, while an unexpected psychedelic bridge introduces manipulated tablas and sitars, sending the composition into a hypnotic musical detour. It is this fearless appetite for experimentation that makes Bullet such an intriguing experience. BB STEVENS refuses to remain within the boundaries of any single genre, allowing each composition to uncover its own unexpected possibilities.
Among the album's most enchanting moments is "Picasso's Evil Twin," a beautifully unconventional ballad that evokes the rustic tenderness of Willie Nelson while incorporating mesmerizing Indian percussion. The song feels like a musical painting, rich with delicate colors, intimate emotion, and imaginative textures. There is an effortless artistry to its arrangement, where seemingly distant musical traditions meet in a wonderfully organic embrace.
Equally captivating is "Opposite of Dancing," a sweeping orchestral composition that possesses the emotional grandeur of a cinematic masterpiece. Its beautifully sophisticated chord progression recalls the timeless elegance of classic rock's greatest songwriters, while lush orchestration elevates the arrangement into something almost otherworldly. Exploring the heartbreaking moment when two lovers lose their once-instinctive emotional rhythm, the song transforms the dissolution of romance into an elegant musical portrait of longing and disconnection.
Elsewhere, Bullet ventures through the intoxicating contradictions of love in "Better or Worse," revisits earlier creative territory with "Starlight in Me (Revisited)," and confronts difficult human realities through the deeply serious subject matter of "Anywhere" and the exhausting struggles depicted in "Indentured Servant." Together, these compositions reveal an artist equally fascinated by life's beauty and its darker, more complicated dimensions.
The album reaches its breathtaking conclusion with "To Whom It May Concern," a profoundly moving reflection on aging, wisdom, and the acceptance of mortality. Delicate, jangling guitars drift through an atmospheric soundscape as BB STEVENS delivers what feels like a deeply personal letter to the world. A message proclaiming that though his eyesight may have softened with age, life's meaning has never been clearer. A heavenly choir of female voices gently surrounds his weathered vocal, creating an almost spiritual atmosphere of serenity and acceptance. It is a magnificent closing statement, finding extraordinary beauty in the realization that growing older can bring us closer to understanding what truly matters.
Produced by Douglas Fabiano, mastered by acclaimed engineer Malcolm Springer, and accompanied by artwork from Christopher Dobry, Bullet marks an exciting artistic chapter for BB STEVENS, whose remarkable career began with a major-label recording contract at just sixteen and has since included songwriting and production work for artists such as Madonna.
What makes Bullet particularly compelling is the humanity connecting its wildly diverse musical landscapes. Beneath the psychedelic experimentation, thunderous rock arrangements, intimate ballads, and orchestral grandeur lies a singular artistic vision, one driven by an insatiable curiosity about the meaning of existence.
BB STEVENS approaches songwriting with the imagination of a painter, the curiosity of a philosopher, and the beautifully untamed spirit of a lifelong rocker. His music is as unpredictable as life itself, capable of igniting rebellion one moment and inspiring quiet contemplation the next.
